The mirror method

How to tell your face shape

Grab a soft measuring tape (or just eyeball it in the mirror) and compare these four measurements. Your widest point and jaw shape decide your face shape.

  1. Forehead

Measure across the widest part, roughly halfway between your brows and hairline.

  2. Cheekbones

Measure across the high points of your cheeks, just below the outer corner of each eye.

  3. Jawline

Measure from the tip of your chin to just below your ear, then double it.

  4. Face length

Measure from the center of your hairline to the tip of your chin, then compare it to the widest number.

Quick answer

Best sunglasses by face shape

The short version: pick frames that contrast your features. Angular faces look best in curved frames, and soft faces look best in angular ones.

★ Your match Oval face shape

Sunglasses for oval faces

The sunglass MVP: balanced proportions mean nearly every frame works.

Because no single feature dominates, oval faces can wear almost any frame. Keep the frame about as wide as the broadest part of your face so the proportions stay balanced.

How to spot it

  • Face is longer than it is wide
  • Cheekbones are the widest point
  • Gently rounded jaw and forehead

Go for

  • Oversized squares & rectangles
  • Aviators
  • Wayfarer-style classics
  • Frames as wide as your face

Skip

  • Frames much wider than your face
  • Tiny frames that look lost
Best frame: Square / rectangle
★ Your match Round face shape

Sunglasses for round faces

Soft curves love contrast, so go angular to add definition.

Angular sunglasses add structure to soft features. Straight brow lines and squared lenses make a round face look longer and more defined.

How to spot it

  • Width and length are about equal
  • Full cheeks
  • Soft, rounded jaw with no sharp angles

Go for

  • Square & rectangular frames
  • Wayfarer-style shapes
  • Bold, angular brow lines

Skip

  • Perfectly round frames
  • Small, narrow frames
Best frame: Round / oval
★ Your match Square face shape

Sunglasses for square faces

Strong angles get softened by rounded or oval frames.

Curved frames break up the strong horizontal lines at your brow and jaw. Round, oval and aviator sunglasses soften the angles while keeping your bone structure front and center.

How to spot it

  • Strong, defined jawline
  • Broad forehead
  • Forehead, cheeks and jaw about equal width

Go for

  • Round & oval frames
  • Aviators
  • Thinner, curved frames

Skip

  • Boxy, angular frames
  • Heavy flat-top shapes
Best frame: Aviator
★ Your match Heart face shape

Sunglasses for heart-shaped faces

Wider up top, so pick frames that balance your forehead and add weight below.

The goal is to balance a broader forehead with a narrower chin. Aviators and bottom-heavy frames pull the eye downward, while light or rimless tops keep the look from getting top-heavy.

How to spot it

  • Forehead is the widest point
  • High cheekbones
  • Narrow, pointed chin

Go for

  • Aviators
  • Bottom-heavy rectangles
  • Round & oval frames
  • Light or rimless tops

Skip

  • Top-heavy or oversized brow lines
  • Heavy cat-eyes
Best frame: Cat-eye / browline
★ Your match Diamond face shape

Sunglasses for diamond faces

Standout cheekbones: frames that add width at the brow show them off.

Diamond faces are the rarest shape. Frames with width or detail along the brow balance high cheekbones and make a narrower forehead look fuller.

How to spot it

  • Cheekbones are the widest point
  • Narrow forehead
  • Narrow, defined chin

Go for

  • Cat-eye & browline frames
  • Oval & rimless styles
  • Frames with detail on top

Skip

  • Narrow frames
  • Frames wider than your cheekbones
Best frame: Cat-eye / aviator
★ Your match Triangle face shape

Sunglasses for triangle faces

A wider jaw is balanced by styles that add width up top.

Top-heavy frames widen the upper face so it matches a broader jaw. Cat-eyes, aviators and bold browlines draw attention up toward your eyes.

How to spot it

  • Jawline is the widest point
  • Narrower forehead
  • Strong lower face

Go for

  • Cat-eye frames
  • Aviators
  • Browline & top-heavy styles
  • Bold colors on the top rim

Skip

  • Narrow, small frames
  • Bottom-heavy shapes

Face shape & sunglasses FAQ

How do I figure out my face shape?

Pull your hair back and look straight into a mirror. Compare the width of your forehead, cheekbones and jaw, then the length of your face. Your widest point and the shape of your jaw tell you your face shape, or take the 30-second quiz at the top of this page.

What sunglasses suit every face shape?

Classic square-ish frames with softly rounded corners, like a wayfarer style, flatter the widest range of faces because they balance both angular and soft features.

What if I'm between two face shapes?

Most people are a blend of two shapes. Go by your widest point and pick frames that contrast your strongest feature: rounder frames for angular features, angular frames for soft ones.

How should sunglasses fit?

Frames should be about as wide as the widest part of your face, sit level without pinching your temples, and your eyes should land near the center of each lens. Every Nectar product page lists lens width, bridge and temple length.

What if they don't look right on me?

No stress. You have 30 days to return or exchange for a different style.

Are Nectar sunglasses polarized?

Nectar sunglasses feature polarized, scratch-resistant lenses that cut glare for everyday wear, from the beach to the trail.
