The word “hipster” means different things to different people. While it originated in the 1940’s Jazz era, it’s now generally associated with millennials who are into artisan foods, super-progressive viewpoints, and preferences for all-things alternative, including lifestyles and music. But even these core hipster values barely scrape the tip of the iceberg. As we explore the hipster style, perhaps we can gain greater insight on these modern day rebels who have such a lack of concern for what you, or anyone else thinks.
The Hipster Style
Clothes and fashion, or anti-fashion as many would call it, are distinguishing traits of any hipster. This often includes shades, particularly wayfarers
, fun and funky sunglasses
, or oversized sunnies
. Hipsters love anything vintage, so sunglasses from every decade are fair game. Also, let’s not forget that they hate conformity, so you’ll only see wild styles
and cheap hipster sunglasses
on these free spirits. Hipsters have perfected the art of looking cool without trying, or breaking the bank.
The Hipster Guy
For the hipster guy, fashion typically falls into one of two categories: Thrift shop kid or the pretty boy. You could see one guy with a huge beard, wayfarers, tight thrift store jeans, and a plaid shirt, and that guy resembles a typical hipster. However, a guy who is perfectly groomed, wearing jean capris, round glasses and a solid haircut is also a hipster. Although there are variations depending on city, age, and sub-culture, typical items in a male hipster’s wardrobe will include tight jeans, plaid shirts, tight sweaters and V-necks, and an assortment of unique shades
and cool hats
The Hipster Chick
Hipster chicks have a fashion sense that follows the hipster guidelines
of irony, apathy, and anti-consumerism. This can mean almost anything not made by a major corporation, but especially includes, fringe boots, floral patterns, leggings, and jeans that either of your parents wore when they were teens. Just as long as it’s some combination of tight and floral, and nobody thinks that you put effort into it, then it’s the hipster style. And don’t forget the ultimate hipster accessory: A cool pair of Bronson hipster shades
to complete the look.
The Modern Hipster Rebel
Critics of the hipster movement loathe their lack of authenticity, but that is exactly the opposite of who they are. With a deep understanding of who they are as individuals, they fully embrace their freedom of expression through their style. But who actually cares what the critics think? Let’s face it, if there wasn’t a little bit of controversy surrounding the “assassins of cool”, then they simply wouldn’t be as cool as they are. Hipsters are modern day rebels because they go against the grain. Non-hipsters want to be hipsters simply because of the attractive qualities of a free spirited individual who refuses to conform, follow tradition, or succumb to the customs of every generation before. Whether you see a hipster rockin’ tight pants and round-framed glasses
, or a grunge jacket from the 90s, there’s always going to be someone telling them to fall in line.
